made us long to hear Winehouse belt out one of her sultry tunes.
House of Holland and Christopher Kane showed us that glam rock was still interesting, stylish and wearable while Dolce and Gabbana looked to Hippie culture for inspiration with a collection of patch quilt dresses suitable to the girl who longed for the days of Woodstock, but was still throughly modern.
Ruffles and ball gowns flowed down the runways of Roberto Cavalli, John Galliano, Lanvin and Zac Posen showing that romance is in the air and on the most stylish of women. Luxury and femininity are mixed with a fun, funky edge. Big Bows, like the ones seen at the Gucci show and highly ornate shoes likes the ones that pranced down the runways of Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, Prada and Antonio Berardi are this season's must have accessories.
Nature made her voice heard over and over this season with nods to florals, animal prints and even the incorporation of feathers (I'm sure Project Runway's Christian is yelling "fierce!") Sonya Rykiel, Stella McCartney and Balenciaga, among others showed floral print dresses in every silhouette while Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B., Wunderkind and Dior by John Galliano roared down the runway with sexy animal prints. Feathers; feathers everywhere was one of the most unique trends with designs by Pucci, Kenzo and Ann Demeulemeester dominating the bevy of bird-inspired fashion. This style is for young and old, uptown and downtown alike and should fly off the shelves.
Other trends to be on the lookout for are Art House Cool meets Clothing chic, Asian inspired tops and metallics. Designers sought inspiration from past and present in the world of art and design (Luella Bartley showed us what happened when a "cool" girl went floral with a touch of Batman thrown in for good measure.) Another is the return of gold as a fashion statement. Head-to-toe gold is no longer the province of rap stars but the glamorous girl going out. Gold and other metallics are ushering in a futuristic feel for spring as we wax optimistic about the idea of a return to opulence.
The voices of designers around the world have spoken and the buzz for Spring/Summer 2008 is as follows: Fun, floral, flirty, funky, free, futuristic and full of hope which in a world filled with frustration, fear and loss of faith is an inspiring message (and a hot fashion statement.)
