Sitting on the porch of our log home after a long summer day eating an ice cream bar. The smell of honey suckle and freshly cut grass fills the crisp late summer air. The only thing that could top that for me would be having a camp fire going. That night there wasn't a fire though just relaxing on the porch swing sneaking bits of ice cream to our golden retriever.
The summer nights when we lived in that house were the best. We were always busy doing things in the yard during the day and then we got to walk around and relax on the porch with the treat of our choice. When we weren't helping in the yard I was helping our dad in the wood shop and my sister was helping our mom in the house or causing trouble somewhere in the neighborhood. If nothing else it was an eventful time in our lives.
The fact was that no matter what happened I knew at the end of the day we could do whatever we wanted to do while having something cold and sweet that made all of the work worth the while. When I think back on it now the things that made me happy then are still doing the job. The satisfaction of knowing that I did something productive during the day and then being able to spoil myself a little at the end of the day.
I have never been one for fancy things and quite frankly I try to stay away from them. I want to stay easy to please and not spend all of my time running around like a chicken with my head cut off or putting up with a husband I can't stand just to be able to get the latest style purse from a certain designer.
When you have simple expectations, not low just simple, you have a much better chance of being happy with what you have and anything that you get extra is appreciated that much more. I don't think many people realize that anymore. I have some friends that have been stuck in the competition of material things. I think I confuse them when we go shopping and I don't get anything unless I need it or when I save up for something instead of getting another credit card. In the state of the economy now though I'm very happy that I am more dependent on the money I have instead of my credit cards and that feeling is right up there with the days of sitting on the porch with our dog at our log house.
