Achieving a healthy lifestyle is simple on the face of it - eat healthily and get some exercise. However, discovering what works for you can be overwhelming. Here are 10 tips that bring together some of the best advice available into one simple list.
1. EXERCISE
If you don't enjoy exercise then think about why. If it's boring then try to make it fun. Exercise doesn't have to mean going to a gym. You can play sports, go for a walk or bike ride, or do it in the comfort of your own home. The key is to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible and that depends upon your own personal preferences.
2. EAT SENSIBLY
The vast majority of people don't need to go on a diet, they just need to eat a sensible balanced diet. Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, don't skip breakfast and eat little and often. It's better to eat five small portions a day than two or three large ones. There's no need to cut out all unhealthy foods either; just ensure that they are the exception rather than the rule. If you feel guilty, it's probably for a good reason...
3. WORK, LIFE BALANCE
If you invest all your time in one thing, it is inevitably to the detriment of other areas of your life. Your health, family, work and play all need to be treated equitably. Too much work and not enough play can put stress on your mind, body and relationships. Similarly, too much play could mean you are not focused enough on developing your career, supporting your family or your own personal development.
4. MULTI-TASK
The most common excuse for not leading a healthy life is a lack of time. Exercise, chores, family time and play are not mutually exclusive. Walk to the shops, play football with your children or push weights and practice your yoga in front of the TV.
5. DRINK WATER
This is such a simple way of keeping healthy and it costs nothing. Nevertheless, around 80% of us are walking around dehydrated because we are not drinking the recommended two litres a day. The benefits of drinking water are manifold:
- It helps your body to digest and absorb vitamins and nutrients.
- It detoxifies the liver and kidneys.
- It aids digestion.
- If you're dehydrated, your blood is thicker, so your body has to work harder to circulate it. As a result, the brain becomes less active, it's harder to concentrate, you have less energy.
Don't forget that caffeine and alcohol dehydrate you further.
6. GET SOME SLEEP
The benefits of a good nights sleep are copious:
- It relieves stress.
- You'll feel energised.
- It elevates your mood.
