With so many reality shows floating about our screen, it is possible for any Tom, Dick or Harry to get their fifteen minutes of fame. They are by no means a high art but nonetheless they are cheap to make and continually devise new ways to both challenge and humiliate their participants.
The general concept underlying a reality show is that with a camera stuck in their face, nobody seems boring and viewers are kept entertained by the emotional plight of the contestants. Who would've known that John from the office secretly knows how to break dance? If this is something that you would like to be a part of, how exactly do you go about being on the likes of American Idol or The Bachelorette?
There are many generic websites which constantly update with the latest casting calls for shows like these. The best of which is perhaps Beonscreen.com. This site has two sections, one for US shows and one for those in the UK and Ireland and upon looking through it, I was dumbstruck by the sheer numbers of reality shows that have hit our screens in recent years. On Beonscreen, there are literally hundreds of shows advertising for people of all shapes, sizes, race and cultures to be part of the program. I just clicked onto the UK version now and they are looking for pregnant brides to be if anyone out there is interested? All the details of where and how to apply are on the site, although you will have to register to do so which does result in being sent a copious number of emails.
Similar to BeonScreen you have RealityTVCastingCalls.com and RealityWanted.com which do exactly as they say on the tin. These are American based sites which list all the available casting calls across the country currently on offer, from Big Brother to the Biggest Loser and Survivor. They also provide you with interview tips for if you are lucky enough to get that far.
Of course, you can also visit the sites for the TV Channel which the shows are on. At CBS.com you will find the casting call listings for the likes of Big Brother 10 or Survivor 17, depending on whether you prefer to be shut up in a house with a group of strangers or stranded on a desert island with them. On ABC.com you'll find links casting call links for Supernanny (have a look at my other article for what I think of this show!), The Mole or Extreme Makeover. You can visit NBC.com if you fancy yourself as an American Gladiator or a contestant on Deal or No Deal. Naturally the two music channel sites, MTV.com and VH1.com have links to
