Most bloggers dream of running a successful blog. Whether they blog for enjoyment or whether they are hoping to make money from their blog, bloggers have goals that they would like to achieve with their blog. Maybe you would like to be recognized as the premier Basket-Weaving blogger on the Internet. Maybe you would like to make a six-figure income like Darren Rowse of Problogger. However you define success for your blog, there are some common ways that you can achieve that success:
* Writing Good Content
Good content is what makes people read your blog, and good content is what gets people coming back to your blog. If you want to establish yourself as an authority on a given topic, you will undermine your goals if your writing is sub-standard. In the same way, if you want to make money with your blog you will need to write content that people want to read so that they will click your links or buy your products.
Good content includes several elements. First, good content is writing that speaks to a need. Web surfers wind up on your blog because they think you might have some advice, a unique perspective, or something enjoyable to read. Meeting a felt need is one part of good content.
Good content is also good writing. If your grammar and spelling are horrible, it will turn readers away from your blog. While there are exceptions to this rule, to run a successful blog you need to have at least a basic understanding of the language in which you are writing.
Good content is durable. Good content will stand the test of time. A blog that is successful in the long term will speak to issues that go well beyond today's headlines.
* Marketing Your Blog
While we usually think of marketing only in terms of making money, the concept applies to a blog with other goals, as well. Marketing, most simply, is the process by which you make others aware of your blog. You can have the best content in the blogosphere, but if no one knows it is there you will never be successful.
Blog marketing can take many forms. For example, one of the most common forms of blog marketing is commenting. Leaving comments on blogs that are in your topic area makes those bloggers aware that you exist, and also exposes you to their readers.
Social bookmarking is another method of marketing your blog. This includes using sites like StumbleUpon, Digg, or del.icio.us to attract readers to your blog.
Finally, many bloggers choose to market their blog using article marketing. Sites like Helium, Ezinearticles, Ehow, and associated content all provide ways for bloggers to promote their blogs, whether it is through links or through an "About Me" page.
Content and marketing are the twin imperatives of a successful blog. If you can be diligent about these two practices, your blog will be successful.
