TV show reviews: Rock of Love

Rock of Love, Nothing but a Good Time

"Rock of Love", one of the many reality shows currently on television, showcases Bret Michael's attempt to find true love. Michaels, the lead singer of the group Poison, works his way through a bevy of beautiful, buxom women all intent upon being his something to believe in. This show, MTV's answer to "The Bachelor", unfortunately seems to be more about sex than good love.

Twenty women move into his Hollywood Hills mansion and prove their adoration to the rock star by competing, back stabbing and manipulating Bret and each other for his affection. According to the premise of the show, Bret is searching for a woman to be the one. His career and lifestyle making the promise of love hard to find. However, what comes across in this show is shallow, catty, gratuitous sex and not anything that could be deemed as the foundation of a lasting relationship.

At some points it is like watching a clique back in highschool. The girls all fight and scheme over the same guy. These women are not portrayed in the best light, coming across as grasping groupies who, after only a few hours or days avow that they are "so in love" with Bret Michaels.
Willing to do anything, scheming and scrapping with each other to get his attention the women, though beautiful, are not always very attractive.

The pursuit of true love seems not to be working. In the first season the runner up, Heather Chadwell, caused a scandal when it was discovered that she had tried to bed Vanilla Ice on the "Surreal Life". The winner, Jes Rickleff, finally told Michaels that he had picked the wrong woman, that he should have picked Heather. Ah true love. More like love on the rocks.

Filled with former porn stars and playboy models, many of whom have been on other shows, one wonders if these ladies are really looking for love or publicity. Bret Michaels searches for someone to share his life among women more concerned with their appearance than their character. In one scene the women grab scissors and proceed to shred their tops to ribbons to make them more seductive, to catch Bret's eye. Is true love based on such mundane concerns?

If you are tuning in to see a group of gorgeous women battling it out in the mud and strutting around in barely there clothing then this is the show for you. This is not the road to true love, but a shallow good time, filled with beautiful eye candy, with no deep plot that can kill the time when there's nothing else on.
