Those who tend to look for services in printed directories are older consumers, so the ratio will decrease as they die. Attrition will soon make printed directories more obsolete than they already are.
In the near future, web sites will become extremely vital to local service businesses to be found by those who will no longer look in printed directories. Web sites can be strategically designed to require no maintenance, and still offer many pages through which the business can be found. If the purpose is to be found and visited or called, the web site need not be interactive. It only needs to be found, and contain an address and phone number!
Other pages that can be found might contain testimonials, calculators, or lists of services, but each should suggest visiting or calling the business.
LINKING IT ALL TOGETHER
The businesses that are most likely to succeed are those that reach large markets. Web sites inexpensively bring services and products to national and world markets without the owner leaving his or her home. Small store front operations can use web sites to generate revenues that exceed in-store sales, while exponentially producing revenue streams only web sites offer. Creative entrepreneurs already utilize web sites these ways, while similar businesses without web sites struggle to pay rent.
However, business owners that most need to understand the importance of web sites when are those who resist it believing printed ads are sufficient. Businesses that do not have web sites will soon be as dead as the market that once searched for services in those printed media.
