Digimon and Pokemon were two of the many things that more or less built my childhood from an entertainment standpoint. Every Saturday morning I would get early and plop down on the couch with a big bowl of sugary cereal and there I would sit for a solid three to four hours, depending if a new episode was being shown. Pokemon and Digimon were two of my favorite television shows as a kid, and I still enjoy watching one of them and playing the other. They have always been popular in Japan, their country of origin, but in the US, the better of the two has been debated since they premiered. "Digimon copied Pokemon!" or "Pokemon sound stupid!" and there are plenty of die-hard fans of both that would never admit to the problems or quality of the other. However I believe that they both have their strong points and their problems, and that the Digimon is better at some things and Pokemon fails at others.
Pokemon is one of the most popular game franchises of all time, spanning over a decade and 12 handheld games. I don't feel like mentioning the console versions because for one, no one really played them including me, and two, the handheld versions have gotten more acclaim and have sold far better. Pokemons dominance of the handheld market began in 1996 with the release of "Poketto Monsuta Aka to Midori", or Pokemon Red and Green, which were later released as Red and Blue internationally. The games were based around the idea of catching, training and battling with your own Pokemon and were very well received by critics. The story was boring and your character didn't talk, but aspect of raising your Pokemon, completing your Pokedex, and finally getting to the elusive level one hundred kept everyone who played glued to their GameBoys. The games expanded with Silver and Gold, which added to the amount of Pokemon that you could catch as well as improved graphics. This trend has continued up until recently with the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, which brings up the total amount of Pokemon to 493. The amount of moves also increased, the task of completing your Pokedex, beating every trainer, and perfecting your team has brought the gameplay time of Pokemon to ridiculous amounts, in the hundreds of hours, and with the addition of online play, the game can never grow old.
The multiplayer aspect is probably the most important aspect of the game and without it would of fell into obscurity years ago. What's the use of having a level 100 red Gyrados if you don't have anyone
