Poetry: Endurance

Snow piles outside the windows bid me to enter their frozen realm.
Winter calls on those with heavy boots and strong hearts.
"Come out and challenge me if you dare!"

Ice forms on the river. Water fights mightily below the surface, bubbling through cracks.
Trees glisten with frozen branches, harsh stick-arms reaching to the gray sky.
Silence reigns, shattered by our breath, puffs of smoke-signals encircling faces,
Ruddy-cheeked between woolen caps and fluffy scarves.

We strap on skis with bear-claw bindings and trek into the woods.
The bounding shepherd dog breaks through the snow-crust; flurries powder his coarse brown fur.
The snow crackles as we slid across it - trees crackle too, ominously.
A rock hides to the left of the trail; we glide to the right.
Poles push in and we thrust ahead, snow grinding against inertial contact.

Somewhere in the world a palm tree sways, a wave laps to shore, the sun shines.
