What to look for in a toilet seat

Getting to the bottom of toilet seat options is well worth some time and research. It does not take much to turn an everyday mundane experience into the best seat in the house.

Most consumers think only of color matching or soft "upholstery" when purchasing a new seat, but whether you are redoing your bathroom dcor or caring for a ill or injured loved one, there are a few things to investigate when it comes to the

appropriate toilet seat for your bathroom. What do you need to know about toilet seats?

One factor to consider is the height of the seat. Is it difficult for you to get to your feet because of an injury or illness or other factors that limit your mobility? Consider a raised seat. Several manufacturers offer seats that are up to five inches higher than the normal seat. Prices start at $15. Some seats attach to the existing toilet seat; some come with handrails of various placement and material. Do you want metal handrails or built in plastic handles? Some raised seats come with a cover, an important factor if the seat is going to be left atop the regular toilet seat. Search on-line or stop into a store, like CVS, that offers devices for those with special medical needs.

What else should you consider about the toilet seat cover? Take a look at the Softclose toilet seat cover, which sellers such as Toto claim "reduces injury and eliminates toilet seat slam." The Softclose hinge forces the seat to come down gradually.
The price range is about $50 to $70.

What about the size of the seat? Elongated toilet seats can also help make the daily trips more comfortable. These seats come open or closed at the front. Round seats are the standard for smaller bathrooms. They measure about 16.5 inches from front to back. Elongated seats measure roughly 18.5 inches. Elongated seats may help larger people feel more comfortable. Prices start at around $15. Investigate the features of the elongated seats, which are available at most retail stores that supply home furnishings, including stores like Target and Home Depot. Most importantly, make sure it is compatible with your toilet. Elongated seats are also sold as raised seats.

Another way to make the elimination experience more comfortable is to get a padded seat. Soft toilet seats start at about $20 and are available in home furnishing stores. These seats also come in an elongated version. Frequent trips or long stays can wear on the body. Padded seats can make a difference in the quality of the experience.
