Best breakfasts in Chicago

Chicago is known for it's great food. Breakfast is no exception. These are some of the lesser known great places to have an outstanding breakfast in the Windy City. For those who demand the best but prefer the road less traveled.

Chicago Diner
3411 North Halsted
Breakfast Mon- Fri 11am-3pm; 10am on Sat & Sun

If you are looking for a vegetarian/vegan breakfast look no further. This award winning diner will serve it up for you as they have been doing since 1983. Locals come here for the likes of Green eggs and "ham" scrambled eggs or tofu with spinach, peppers, onions and pesto, broccoli and vegetarian ham , served with their home-style potatoes and toast this makes a hearty meal.

I personally like that fact that they are serving free range eggs . Many consider the Chicago Diner the finest vegan diner in the city.

5020 N. Sheridan
Open 9am Wed-Mon

Okay it was the Mark Jackson's granola and fresh fruit with the yogurt and honey that got my attention. This is what I consider the breakfast of champions. The menu here is enough to bring a grown man to tears, think grilled pork chops , two organic eggs fixed your way, hash brown potatoes , toast, fruit cup and country gravy. They will have to roll you out the door.

Everything possible is done to serve organic , antibiotic and hormone free products here. Think organic buckwheat for the pancakes , organic oatmeal with dried fruit and creme fraiche and if you want something really special the Achleskiver, Danish donuts with syrup and powdered sugar. This may not be your Momma's breakfast but if Momma served a Lox Platter like Tweet you would be at her house every day for breakfast.

The Breakfast Club
1341 West Hubbard
open Mon-Fri. 6am; Sat & Sun 7am

This is carb central, if you want to have the best French Toast in Chicago a stop at The Breakfast Club is a must. They offer traditional French toast , done with Challah bread served with bananas or Stuffed French Toast with cream cheese, walnuts and cinnamon, either way they are a winner, It isn't only the French Toast though, they have great Belgian Waffles with just a dusting of powdered sugar or fresh strawberry, banana or blueberry waffles with whipped cream, again you can't choose badly.

For the egg lover there are plenty of omelet choices from the traditional cheese to the Avocado, Cream Cheese & Bacon Omelet. Located in a cute "pink" cottage this is a special place to have your first or last meal of the day. (okay some of us have been out all night)

Victory's Banner
2100 W. Roscoe
Wed-Mon open at 8am

This is another vegetarian restaurant but they use free range eggs and have been awarded best breakfast in Chicago by the Chicago Reader so I couldn't leave them out. The omelets are made with three eggs and include hearth bread and grilled potatoes. You can fill your omelet with goat cheese, caramelized onions, red peppers, feta, mushrooms , pesto and a whole lot more.

Their French toast have been declared a must have by the Chicago Tribune and who can fault them with peach butter and real maple syrup or raspberries with a dusting of powdered sugar. For me though it's the pancake choices that stand out, raspberry, banana walnut, apple pecan chocolate chip, oat bran or the amazing Pancake Delight with yogurt and granola and raspberries, oh my.
