IS LISTENING TO MUSIC AT WORK CALMING OR DISTRACTING?
I have always enjoyed listening to music and appreciate most types of music. Music soothes the soul, quiets the savage beast, depending on the kind of music. It can also make me melancholy, fill me with energy, fill me with joy and even make me feel angry, depending on the kind of music I am hearing, but over all, I find music to be calming and not often distracting. I often find myself humming along with it, moving to the rhythm. It motivates me. But what about music in the workplace, is it calming or distracting. Again, it depends on the kind of music you are listening to.
I think music is good in the workplace. For the better part of my working life I have worked in public settings having to deal with the public. It isn't easy. It can be stressful. You meet a hundred different personalities a day and more and have to be able to deal with them all. You have to be nice even when you don't want to be. Your nerves can become frazzled in a hurry on some days. Music soothes the savage beast that is rearing up inside you.
The place I worked had what some of you call "elevator music" playing softly in the background all day long. It wasn't at all loud or distracting. It didn't pull me away from my duties but I did find that if I started feeling stressed if I just zoned in on the music for a few minutes, even just a few seconds, it really did help and I wasn't quite so quick to want to rip the throat out of a customer that was giving me a hard time and not willing to listen to any reason or explanation of the situation, whatever it might have been. Just so you know, I was a customer service supervisor for many years and dealing with the public and customer complaints was my primary job. No matter what the situation I still had to be nice and no, the customer is not always right but they are our paycheck. Music probably saved my job on many occasions. It also provides a pleasant and soothing atmosphere for the customer. It is quieting in our otherwise hectic and rushed lives. Music, most music is a good thing when played at a level that can be heard and traumatize the eardrum. It should not be blaring so loud you can not carry on a conversation without yelling, it shouldn't be causing a headache and further stress. Most of our jobs are stressful enough as it is. It should be happy music. Happy music makes happy hearts.
I have found that music energizes me. Let me give you an example; One day we were really short staffed,
