This though is even more expensive at GBP140 (USD280) and still requires the additional purchase of track and power supply. The detail though is exquisite and is one of my favourite N gauge models of all time.

Train sets are not for everyone and many people decide to buy individual items to ensure that their layouts are exactly how they want it to look. It is more expensive buying individual items but it does add that personal touch.

As I said at the start you can gain a wealth of knowledge from a toy fair. Often though the answers can be found closer to home, most major towns will have a model shop specialising in model railways. The nearest major town to me has four. These shops will be happy to show you their range and talk through their benefits in detail in the hope of a sale. Take a look at the sets available and see if any of them grab your attention and meet your needs. If they don't it may be necessary for you to buy individual items, again whilst it may cost a bit more there is plenty of choice out there.

In addition there are a number of periodicals dedicated to the subject, as well as newsgroups spread across the internet.

If you are looking to get someone else involved in the hobby then take get them involved. It is all very well buying a train set for someone else, but they may not be interested in the hobby or in the theme that you have picked for them.

Whatever you do, do not rush into anything. Do your research; there is nothing worse than investing a load of money into a hobby and finding out that it unsuitable for you or your home. Model railways can give many years of entertainment. The hobby evolves, you may change scales but it is always pleasing to see your layout grow and become more detailed over time. When you start you will see how much there can be to the hobby and there are endless possibilities of what you can do with it.
