A closer look at female bullying

by Vicki Tan

Created on: March 16, 2008

The complete title of this literary work is, "Killing Her Softly: A Closer Look at Female Bullying." The aim of my write-up is to investigate the reality of female bullying where girls inflict psychological harm onto others. As the types of bullying that girls engage in are less noticeable, the problem is often overlooked. Bullying can leave lifelong emotional scars on a victim and it must not be tolerated. Bullying can cause the victim to lose confidence and trust in other people. Growing up days should be the happiest moment of a person's life. However, bullying ruins it.

My personal reason for selecting this as a topic is because I have been a victim of bullying and I know of people who have also been through it. As I am a film graduate whose main ambition is to become a novelist and a screenwriter, I would like to produce literary works and films on bullying.

'The Trend of Bullying'

Some people believe that bullying has worsened over the past few decades because of changes in society: Modern parents are sparing the rod and spoiling the child. As a result, many children grow up wanting to be better or have more than other people.

Some people believe that bullying is no worse than before. Nowadays, schools and families are dealing with bullying problems more so this issue is more exposed.

Regardless of what is past and present, bullying is an insidious problem and it must not be disregarded. Here is a point to note: A person has to be able to draw the line between good-natured teasing and bullying. Teasing is only acceptable if both parties find it humorous.

'Who are Bullies?'

Bullies come in all shapes and sizes. Added to that, bullies come in all ages, genders, ethnicities, races and religions. They are not necessarily the stereotyped big-sized person with the menacing look. They could be decent-looking people who seem friendly and well-mannered. In fact, when a bully seems to have positive qualities, people would find it hard to believe that an angelic person could be a bully.

Bullies are often manipulative people who know how to control or dominate others. They may have sweet mouths that flatter other people; they may shower other people with food and snacks to buy friendships; and so on. Sometimes, when other people are being friendly or kind towards us, we think that they are nice without realizing thatthey are actually manipulating us.

'Reasons for Bullying'

There is a variety of reasons as to why people bully others.

In some cases, people become bullies because
