What to look for in a toilet seat

The Toilet Seat Dilemma

A few years ago, I was having some trouble with my tush. I was scheduled for surgery, and realized that my hard plastic toilet seat might hinder my recovery a bit. It was at this point that I decided to go in search of the perfect toilet seat to solve my dilemma.

I had always heard about those wonderful cushioned seats, and decided that I must have one to quicken my recovery. I thought it would be a good idea to get one right away, so I could break it in properly. Indeed, I not only broke my seat in, but I managed to break it within a very short time.

Cushioned Toilet Seats

Cushioned toilet seats, while being comfortable, are not conducive to being scoured. I am not accustomed to being personal with a dirty abode. It didn't take long for my tidy little toilet brush to poke holes right through the plastic of my seat, exposing the sponge filling beneath. Every time I cleaned thereafter, the sponge on my comfy seat remained wet for lengthy periods of time. In fact, it eventually got moldy. In the interim, the plastic continued to rip, and before long, pinched me every time I sat down.

It was clear that I needed to replace my special seat. Since my recovery had gone on without a hitch, I felt pretty good. I was ready to take on the task of interior decorating, and chose to start in the bathroom. Naturally, the first thing that had to go was that ripped up, moldy, cushioned toilet seat. I was in the mood for something pretty and elegant that would coordinate with a new shower curtain and towels.

Designer Toilet Seats

I went in search of the perfect toilet seat at local home decorating stores. They had some unique designer seats with embroidery and decals. I could choose everything from elongated seats to raised and elevated ones, even my not so favorite soft, cushioned seats were available and able to be purchased for a price.

That was the problem. I was not prepared to have to earn approximately two paychecks just to purchase one fancy new toilet seat. While I appreciate the service my seat offers, it is still just a shield with a hole in it for me to sit on while I read a magazine.

It was time to visit the local home fix it shops. Perhaps it was even time to shop at Walmart again, after the prices I'd seen at home decorating stores. The progress of my search continued until I found the perfect toilet seat for my newly decorated bathroom.

Wooden Toilet Seats

Quite by accident, I met someone who offered to help me in my quest. He was a simple customer service rep who shared his expertise in choosing the perfect toilet seat at one of those fix it shops. As it turned out, I was able to pick a seat that, while not being designer, coordinated very well with my bathroom. I chose a wooden seat that matched my cabinets perfectly.

Wooden toilet seats are durable and easy to clean. They are not cold like plastic seats when you sit down. In fact, they are rather inviting with their rich colors that remind you of fires in the fall. Wooden seats come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The best advice I learned about choosing a new toilet seat is to get one that fits your bowl. Otherwise, you just might end up spending two paychecks to install it.
