As a cake decorator myself, the "icing on the cake" of any wedding is, indeed, the wedding cake. It is the centerpiece of a beautiful reception and an intricate part of the bride and grooms fond memories of their special day. Picking out your wedding cake doesn't need to be a long and tedious process, and if you have faith in your cake decorator - they will create a piece of art that is more glorious and beautiful than you ever imagined, you just need to tell them exactly what you are looking for.
First of all, you need to set a price. If you are on a budget for your special day, there is nothing worse than having to worry about over-spending. As important as this day is, it isn't worth the headache if you're spending more than you have. The average wedding cake generally sells between 200 and 400 dollars - it depends on how much work goes into the cake, how intricate it looks, how many people it serves, and which techniques go into building it.
If cost is an issue for you, ask around. Cake decorating can be done in just a few simple steps, and if you have a family member or friend that has the know-how to create a cake, they may be just what you need - they may design and create the cake that you are looking for, and for a much cheaper price as well.

How many people are going to be attending the reception? This question is very important, as this will dictate the size of your cake. Remember, it is always better to have cake left over than it is to be short a piece, so in this case - bigger is better.
What is your wedding theme? You may want to base the cakes design around the theme of your wedding. Perhaps you are going for an Autumn theme, or have chosen a few colours to adorn the reception area. If this is the case, tying these themes or colours into the wedding cake can really pull the entire room together. Suggest some design ideas to the cake decorator, just so they can get a feel of what you are looking for. If you're really into a certain
