How to stock your first aid kit

First aid kits are a simple yet effective way to prepare you and your family in case of medical emergencies. Although there are many ready-made first aid kits on the market, creating your own gives unparalleled control over the size, shape and contents of your first aid kit. Below is a list of items that should be included in most first aid kits.

First Aid Kit Items by Kit Type:

Gauze - Home, Travel and Emergency
Ace Wraps - Home, Travel and Emergency Medical Tape - Home, Travel and Emergency Medical Scissors - Home, Travel and Emergency Hydrogen Peroxide - Home, Travel and Emergency Band Aids - Home and Travel
Nausea/Vomiting Medication - Home and Travel
Anti-Diarrhea Medication - Home and Travel
Pain Killers - Home and Travel
Hand Sanitizer - Home and Travel
Burn Ointment - Home
Alcohol Swabs/Wipes - Home
Smelling Salts - Home
Emergency Blankets - Home
Splints - Home
Quick-clot - Home and Emergency
First Aid Booklet/Manual - Home

All of the supplies listed above are commonly available in most pharmacies and department stores. Any container that you feel suites your needs will work for your first aid kit. Just keep in mind the size of the container and how much you'll be putting into it.

Your home first aid kit will obviously be the largest of the three. Because of the large size of a home first aid kit you are able to include many items that you cannot easily add to a travel or emergency first aid kits. Splints for broken bones, emergency blankets for cold weather injuries or shock, and an extensive first aid manual are all very useful additions to the home first aid kit. You may also want to include a medical reference for common illnesses and medical conditions.

The travel first aid kit should cover all of your basic first aid needs, but still be small and light enough to pack into your luggage without causing you any inconvenience.
