Tips for buying personal electronics

Too often good marketing and a plethora of features influence the decision making when it comes to personal electronics. Having the latest and greatest gadget can leave our pocket book empty only to become outdated a few months later. Taking the time to evaluate what you are looking for and assessing what you really require will keep you up to date longer, reduce the number of devices, and ensure you are getting all the features you need.

Sit down and take the time to plan out all the personal devices you will need. Make a list of features you require. Do you need a cell phone, something to play music, GPS, perhaps even some mobile gaming? After making your list expand it out with the features you are looking for in each item. Decided if you need things like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity, a quad band phone, and how much music do I really plan to listen to? Now most importantly decide how long you plan to keep the device before upgrading again. Some good reasoning for this is the following example. I plan to buy a PDA with Cell Phone and keep it for 3 years. I will budget $25 per month for the device and it must have GPS, gaming, MP3, plus it syncs with my PC at home or work. I can plan to spend up to $900 knowing I will replace it after 3 years.

Research the types of devices offered and compare their features against your list of requirements. That 160 GB iPod looks great but really are you going to listen to that many songs in one go? But then again that iPod could also be used as that mobile hard drive you may be looking for. Does that iPod have a cell phone? No, maybe I should look at something else. Things to research are expected battery life, compatible formats, performance specifications, etc. This is the point where you will find out if a product will meet what you need it to do.

Upon finding a suitable device, it's extremely important to find some product reviews. A firsthand account of what others have had to say can tell you if the product lives up to what the manufacturer claims. It is always good to talk to knowledgeable people, be it friends or sales attendants in a store. You can get the inside scoop on how the product actually performs in the real world. Good sources of information can be found on the internet, in magazines, and from store attendants. Take the time to find out all the details and get more than one review.

Taking the time to properly plan, research, and review the product you are interested in can save you money in the long run. Having a single device that can do everything you require will cut down on the devices you need to buy. Ensure you make a budget and shop for the best device within that budget. Don't be swayed by fancy marketing techniques and all the glamour that may surround a device. Remember what is important when you begin your search.
