Water Wars. What a thought. People fighting over water. Some countries get too much others get too little to live on.
Over the next few years people are becoming concerned that there may be wars over who owns what water. However, it is my view that we will not allow this to happen. There are two main reasons for my view:
Climate Change and Technological Development
Firstly, Climate Change. If trends continue the world will get hotter and people will assume this means more droughts, which it does. But as global temperatures rise the ice caps will rise which will lead to more flooding. This will mean countries such as the United Kingdom will become partly submerged, I am sure that we will pay good money to have water removed that is not needed. This means that countries will be able to buy in the excess water that will be created by Climate Change. The World Bank would probably give loans to poorer African countries so that they can purchase water from the countries that have an excess.
Secondly, technological development will mean that irrigation will improve and charities such as Oxfam will also have enough money to create fresh water pumps in almost all villages worldwide. This will mean that countries will be trying to get rid of water rather than trying to get more of it. As irrigation technology improves more people worldwide will have access to fresh water. People will give more to charities to aid this kind of work to help development poorer countries so that they can support themselves when it comes to water.
In conclusion, I think that "water wars" are very unlikely to happen in the future. With Climate Change on our doorstep it seems to be unlikely that water will be in short supply. People will become more careful about water usage in the future and any "water war" would probably take place between companies, not countries. Everything should be okay and as Climate Change awareness grows the probability of "water wars" decreases day by day.
Don't leave the tap on while you are brushing your teeth! That's a useful tip for helping cut water usage down and prevent shortage.
