Symptoms and treatment of common sleep disorders

Do you spend your mornings waking up to tackle the alarm clock and demanding it take a snooze? Are you struggling to get some sleep or maybe left sleepy eyed all day because of too much? You could be suffering from a sleep disorder..

Some of the most common sleep disorders are:

insomnia
sleep apnea
RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome)
narcolepsy

INSOMNIA (symptoms and treatment suggestions)


Defined as a significant lack of high-quality sleep.

Symptoms:
problems falling asleep even if you are exhausted
require sleeping pills or alcohol to coax you to sleep
waking often during the night or lying awake in the middle of the night
waking too early in the morning and not feeling rejuvenated
daytime drowsiness, fatigue, and irritability

Some suggestions on treating insomnia are: improving bedtime habits, ways of relieving stress, relaxation exercise, if that doesn't work a doctor may prescribe an alternative treatment.

SLEEP APNEA
Described as when your breathing stops or gets very shallow while sleeping.

Symptoms:
frequent waking at night
feelings of 'choking' or gasping for air
gasping, gagging, choking sounds may happen in your sleep

Treatment for such a disorder includes behavioral changes, physical and mechanical devices, and even surgery.

RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome)
A sensory disorder with uncontrollable urges to move your legs while trying to sleep.

Symptoms:
almost irresistible urge to move legs
uncomfortable, tingly, or creeping sensations
small, jerky movements of the toes, feet and legs stopping you from falling asleep

Suggestions on treatment are alternative therapies, lifestyle change and maybe even nutritional supplements.

NARCOLEPSY
This disorder causes a person to have difficulty staying awake.

Symptoms:
uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the day
excessive day time sleepiness
sudden short lived loss of muscle control during emotional situations (cataplexy)

Required treatment include treatment to the nervous system using combinations of medication, behavioral treating, and counseling.
