Car reviews: Jaguar XJ

Jaguar owners are a strangely loyal breed, proudly possessive of their unique motor car. I am happy to say that I am one of them. I have owned my Jaguar for the past ten years and my family and I are unashamedly one-eyed about our graceful cat. We love her!

The sleek lines of this luxury machine, almost unchanged since the 60s, epitomizes the grace of its jungle namesake leaping full stretched as it purrs along the highway with ease, control, and ultimate stability. The Jaguar is at its best on the open road, its fully independent suspension system maintaining total control with the wheels gripping the road, even in the tightest curves and in all conditions.

The opulent interior is all leather and wood. The natural leather upholstery of the seats is handcrafted with only the best hides, chosen for their matching grain and color and hand sewn for a perfect fit. You can feel the luxury as you settle comfortably into the soft leather seats. The driver's seat has a 12-way adjustable seating position including a power steering column, adjustable pedals and electric headrest.

The walnut woodgrain on the dash is cut from a single tree and carefully matched end to end with each side of the dashboard a mirror image of the other. The distinctive steering wheel fits naturally to the driver's hands, the padded, leather-wrapped grip giving perfect control. The trip computer on the dash records fuel consumption, distance traveled, and time at a glance. In the back seat, the passengers can adjust their own climate control and stereo systems.

The 2007 XJ6 with a 3.0 liter engine is 5 meters long and 2 meters wide and weighs only 1545 kg, less than both a Falcon and Commodore. Its 3.0 liter engine gives 179 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque. Jaguar credits the torque spread to a variable- geometry induction system and continuously variable cam phasing which adjusts the timing of the intake valve opening and closing depending on engine speed, load and oil temperature. With a top speed of 233 km/h it will hit the speed limit in 8.1 seconds. City fuel consumption is 15.3 liters/100km and 7.7 liters /100 on the highway.

This sensually stylish jungle cat, the Jaguar X6 is undoubtedly in a class of its own - pure luxury.
