Guten Tag!
There is nothing like a delicious meal of bratwurst, sauerbraten and weinerschnitzel. I love German food! Luckily there are a few great German finds in New York City (though I believe there should be more!).
1. Lederhosen German Wurst and Bierhaus
At Lederhosen, in the Greenich Village at Grove and Bleecker streets, the food is fabulous and relatively cheap, the beer is served in Oktoberfest sizes, and the wait staff is very friendly and warm compared to other German restaurant options in the city. Be sure to try the potato pancakes and currywurst, and don't forget to have pretzels as a sidedish for your beer.
2. Heidelberg Restaurant
On the upper east side, in a traditionally German Yorkville neighborhood, on 2nd Avenue, Heidelberg Restaurant offers an upscale German food option. The German beer and liquor list is impressive and, of course, tasty. The food is great and is served in huge portions, but it is rather expensive. In particular, I would recommend the sauerbraten, the viener schnitzel, the potato pancakes, and the wursts. Some of the desserts are tasty here as well, especially the apple strudel and apfelkuchen.
3. Hallo Berlin
Located at 10th Avenue and 44th Street, Hallo Berlin offers tasty options of bratwursts and fish dishes in their traditional German beer garden. Customers have complained about the service of the waiters and the overall atmosphere of the beer garden, but the food is always good.
4. Nurnberger Bierhaus
If you can make it over to Staten Island, Nurnberger Bierhaus is a great option for German dining. The portions are large are delicious, and the ambience is great. The play traditional German music, have a fantastic beer list, and always have friendly service. Be sure to try the herring salad, the sauerbraten, the potato dumplings and the sauerkraut.
5. Zum Stammtisch
Just a bit outside of central New York City, Glendale offers a great authentic German restaurant option at Zum Stammtisch. The food at Zum's is delicious and hearty. In particular, the jaegerschnitzel, the potato balls and the goulash soup are all to die for.
Guten Appetit!
