might be of our own military craft, both standard and experimental. Whenever someone did suggest this, the UFO community (by now there was one) shouted them down as part of the conspiracy. All the US government had to do to pour more gasoline on this fire was to announce something idiotic again, for example, the famous "swamp gas" explanation.
The evolution of the UFO phenomenon roughly parallels the evolution of US weapons development. When the US shifted from nuclear build-up to experiments with biological weaponry, people and cattle started to be abducted and subjected to experimental medical procedures. During the cattle mutilation phase of the UFO craze, "black helicopters" were often seen in conjunction with the mutilations. Again, rather than taking this as evidence that the US government was doing these things itself, UFO believers interpreted this development as "proof" that the government was in cahoots with the aliens and their evil biological experiments.
In the late 90s, UFO phenomena began to lean toward mass sightings of huge airships with blinking lights that moved silently across the night sky (again, often near military bases). We know that at this time the US military was experimenting with silent cargo airships, and many military weapons fans were eagerly awaiting the announcement of the invention of just such a ship. The Stealth Bomber, another weapon the military said "did not exist," until it officially did, is another craft that is almost certainly the source of many of the later UFO sightings.
Personally, I do not think the US government is capable of keeping a recovered alien craft and the bodies that spilled out of it a secret for over 50 years. The US government can't even balance its own budget or get tax refunds out on time, never mind create a vast conspiracy around alien craft. But one thing the US government IS really good at is lying. We've seen that in action all too many times. Especially recently.
Can life exist on other planets? Almost certainly it can and probably does. Is the US government hiding it in an underground vault somewhere in the vicinity of Area 51?
No. No, it isn't.
