Located in central part of Spain, declared as a national monument, Toledo is the capital of province Toledo and the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. The city seems like a giant labyrinth and everyone can have in mind that here one can be lost very easy. Plaza Zocodover in the center of Toledo is a good place from where you can start your walking and visit what you want. It is important to be mentioned that the city attractions are very near to the central hill of the city.
Toledo is often called the"city of three different cultures". Probably because of the coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures, Toledo is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. There is a signidficant cultural and monumental heritage which is well preserved. Because of this reason Toledo is one of the Spanish cities with the greatest wealth of monuments.
The old city, located on the mountaintop, surrounded by the Tagus River, contains historical sites worth visiting. Some of them are: the Cathedral, the Zocodover, the Alcazar and the central market place. The different artistic styles are the reason that the old part of the capital of La Mancha has to be named an open-air museum.
Actually, there are many museums and monuments on the city. Museums: El Greco House Museum, Cathedral Treasure Museum, Museum of Visigothic Councils and Culture, Sefardi Museum, Toledo museum of Contemporary Art, Toledo Army Museum and others. Monuments; the Synagoguee of Santa Maria la blanca, the Synagogue of El Transita, the Cathedral of toledo, teh Monastery of St.Juan de los Reyes, Alcazar de Toledo, etc.
The Gothic Cathedral of Toledo built between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries is one of the most impressive cathedrals in Spain. It is remarkable with the main altarpiece, statues and frescoes. Paintings by El Greco, Titian, Rafael, Van Dyck and other famous artists could be seen in the Museum of the Cathedral.
Alcazar (fortified place) is Toledo`s most famous attraction. Rebuilt several times by Visigoths, muslims and Christians the fortress attracts today hundreds of tourists every day. The history of the fortress is long. First used as a Roman palace(3rd c.), strngthened by Alfonzo VI, finished by Alfonzo X, its most famous siege was during the Spanish Civil War ( the Nationalists held the fortress against the Republicans). By visiting the museum one can be very impressed by the sword collection and different models which represent the castle in different time.
