the St. Regis Hotel, which holds a formal tea daily. He said to drop his name with the manager there, and this would guarantee her access to a table. Sure enough, my husband and daughter arrived at 4:00 and found there to be a one and a half hour wait. Upon inquiring for the manager by name and mentioning her contact with the tea-company owner, my husband and daughter were immediately escorted to a table where they enjoyed a formal, British-style afternoon tea. Though my husband may have looked out of place among the older ladies, most of whom were, no doubt, multi-millionaires, the $130 it cost to give my husband and daughter this special time was a bargain, in the long run.
All the media outlets have their hubs in New York, as do many of the late-night talk-show hosts. Just a quick glance at some of the facades of the buildings will tell you that everything on television is not all glitz and glamor.
Our family consists of Food-Channel "nuts". So, while in New York, we decided to visit several of the restaurants of famous chefs. That decision, though costly, was one of the best we made. Not only did it take the mystery out of some of the "famous" chefs we all see across the media, but our children formed definite opinions of the various chefs through their experiences in the restaurants. Some of the food was not very good, and, sadly, the service was atrocious in one of the establishments we visited. This leads to, of course, a more discriminating (and informed) view of what they see when sitting at home.
New York City simply has everything. As a visitor to this great city, if you're going with children, take the opportunity to show them that even in the greatest city in America, nothing is beyond their reach or their comprehension.
