"I did it!" Janice gloated. "I broke into Jeff's Cybermate box!"
"Oh, wow! Let's see." The two girls tumbled down the stairs to the family room.
"How in the world did you manage?" Ellen asked as Janice brought the browser online and called up the Cybermate site. Janice's brother, eighteen-year-old Jeff, was always lording it over them because he was two years older and a high-school graduate. The fact that he could not find full-time work and was still living at home did not seem to dampen his sense of superiority. He acted more like a father than a big brother.
Just before Jeff's grad last spring, they had listened in the stairwell as he and some of his buddies collaborated in a steamy communiqu to a lovelorn siren in cyberspace. Now they both had cybersex toys of their own to flirt with when their parents were not watching too closely. Composing litanies of lust had kept them occupied for many giggly hours during the last four months. Exploring Jeff's virtual love life promised to be even more fascinating.
"I read through the whole list of male cybermates, even the gay ones," Janice explained. "And I found 'Conan'. Twenty-two, he said, six feet, well-muscled - now there's a laugh! - executive in the computer industry. Just the sort of thing Jeff would lie about. And you know how he reads those Conan comic books all the time."
Janice logged on as 'Conan'.
"But the password?"
"It wasn't hard. I only had to try half a dozen. It was NIPPI. Jeff doesn't have much imagination."
Nippi. The dog's name. It had to be Jeff, all right. Even if someone else decided to use that word, they would spell it with a y.
"So - what kind of a lover is he?" Ellen asked.
Janice brought one of the messages on the screen, placing the cursor on the "log out" button, just in case. "Surprisingly sensitive and mature, actually. And he sounds really hot for this Ophelia chick. Hasn't written anyone else for at least a month. Hello....we have a new message."
*In my dreams, I run through the heather with you, hand in hand," Janice read in her most passionate tone, "and lie beside you on the gentle earth, watching your breasts rise and fall. I kiss your throat, and your breath comes hard again. Slowly, ever so slowly, I undo the lacing of your blouse and my lips brush over your....*
Ellen caught her breath and felt momentarily dizzy.
"Hot, huh?" Janice laughed.
"Janice! Are you home?" a male voice called from upstairs.
"Evasive manoeuvres!" Janice muttered as she hit the mouse
