Crop circles are not evidence that UFOs exist. Crop circles say far more about the human race than they do of extraterrestrial life. Crop circles look too fantastic to have been made by people and yet, they are. We are a species that can actually produce some remarkable works of art, even in complete darkness, and do not need any interplanetary help in doing so.

Game On

There have been several crop circle contests in Europe since the 1990's. These are performed in the dead of night on assigned plots of a massive rented field. The usual tools are just lumps of wood and rope to help stamp down the tall crop plants. Sometimes plastic pipes are used to roll out the patterns. The resulting designs have been both gorgeous and incredible.

In the early 1990's, crop circle artists (who had been staying quiet like graffiti artists, not even using tags) decided they were tired of the aliens getting all of the credit for their hard work. Since the artists didn't want to pay for crop damages, they also noticed the farmers with crop circles seem to still be doing okay with their field-turned-canvas. They began to talk about what they do in the dead of night, especially those in Wiltshire, England.

The Gig Is Up

A Discovery Channel documentary, "Crop Circles: The Mystery in the Fields" was even made showing these artists at work, showing how crop circles in England and Germany were made. These artists included English pranksters Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, who quickly made a circular design stepping on a wooden board to flatten the plants.

Artists confessed on camera that they often liked to do something a little extra to add to their latest crop circle. Many liked to put glowsticks or penlights inside of transparent balloons and let them float around. This explains a lot of the strange lights seen surrounding a crop circle discovery.

None of this has made much of a difference in those who firmly believe that crop circles establish the existence of aliens. When asked why the aliens would bother making such elaborate structures, the usual response is something like, "How should I know? I'm not an alien. How could any human know how an alien thinks?"

In Conclusion

Perhaps crop-circle artists are aliens, in a way. They certainly don't feel like they fit in with the usual crop of humanity they find themselves in. Some of their works speak not only of their own wish for identity, but of a silent plea for acceptance in the strange world they find themselves stuck living in.

Some of them look as if they are pleas to any passing UFOs to come take them away. Crop circles do not prove the existence of UFOs, but they are great evidence that human beings contain an infinite capacity for creativity.
