Bringing unity back into schools

Back in the 60's, 70's and 80's when our generation and the generations before us were in the classroom, we started each day off with the Lord's prayer and National Anthems. During those times, there was never any questions on our minds or in our hearts about our own faith and beliefs as well as those of others.

We were taught the 'Golden Rules' that any man, woman and child should live by. Those rules taught us respect. Respect for our parents as well as other adults, teachers, friends, neighbours and ourselves.

Those rules taught us to honor our parents, love our neighbors, not to steal or harm one another.

The Lord's prayer and the commandments gave us a guideline of how to grow up with good morals, character and respect for one another.

Children respected and obeyed their parents and all adults of authority. They knew they were loved and comforted in times of need. They were loved and appreciated and they knew it. There was more harmony within the home as well as at school because there was more respect.

Over the past several years, there has been more and more breakouts of violence and homelessness with our youth due to lack of guidance, mentoring and understanding.

It seems that since these teachings have been removed from the public schools, the violence and lack of respect has spiraled out of control. While these children have spent their day at a school where there is bullying, foul language, peer pressures and high stress on their academics, they are losing out on even more important 'Life Lessons'. Our schools are so pressured on the 'Textbook Academics', there is less teaching and guidance for them on valuable lessons that every child needs to learn to grow as an individual in building self-esteem, confidence, faith and belief in themselves.

While certain cultures are crying 'discrimination' wherever there is christianity, would it not be feasible to instead of just bringing christianity back into the schools, that all cultures be brought into the school curriculum itself? The children would be able to learn of all faiths, beliefs and traditions. This way, in turn, no child is being denied their faith and they would learn about and have a new respect for one another.

Maybe it would bring more harmony onto the schoolgrounds as well. Let's bring unity into the schools!
