Honesty is always the best policy in every relationship. If you want to maintain a good relationship with your spouse, your children, your friends, your relatives, your colleagues, your boss or any other person you know, you need to be honest. Most people do not appreciate lying and if you are continuously viewed as a liar, will lose confidence in you if you hide the truth.
Honesty means you are always telling the truth and you expect others are honest to you; so you need to be honest to them too. Friendships are valuable and if you are lying you will lose your best friends. Lying will always hurt someone else; maybe not immediately but after a time your friends will discover the truth and know you were lying. They'll get a bad feeling and confidence is lost.
Even though honesty might be the best policy, there are situations where it may be difficult to tell the truth. Suppose you have a friend and you know his or her spouse has a relationship with someone else and your friend doesn't know that. Is it really the best policy to share this information? There are different opinions; maybe your friend won't believe you and you will have trouble with your friendship.
You may consider hiding the truth and avoid this subject because you are better off avoiding interference their relationship. On the other hand your friend can blame you for not telling this if he/she discovers you knew this already for some time and didn't warn him or her because you are considered to be "a confidential friend" for him or her.
If you are married honesty between both partners is absolutely necessary. You can't maintain a good relationship if there is no honesty between both of you. There are always problems which arise and you need to be honest to solve the problems and maintaining a substantial relationship. When one partner discovers his/her spouse has lied, he or she will always feel hurt and loses trust to the betrayer. Confidence is broken and he/she and usually there is always fear trust will be broken again.
Even if you have problems in your marriage and you had an affair with someone else, it is best you are honest to your partner and apologize for committing adultery. There is no good reason for cheating but maybe you can save your marriage with honesty and apologizing for what you did. It is better to be honest before someone else tells your spouse you had an affair with someone else. Honesty is the key for a lasting relationship.
