increase in the numbers of divorce. Recent statistics indicate that more than 50% of American marriages now end in divorce. In California, that number is closer to 75%. Divorce is emotionally draining for both husband and wife, but when children are involved, the number of individuals affected increase. Shame and public ridicule can cause tremendous emotional stress for adults, and can be even more troubling for children. Many children now require counseling after the divorce of parents, often considering themselves partly to blame for the troubled marriage.

Infidelity is also one of the most cited reasons for domestic abuse. Because of the heightened emotional status of the offended partner, many arguments about extramarital affairs involve physical contact. This serves little in resolving the underlying issue of the affair, and compounds problems by possibly leading to legal problems as well.

Obviously, the best way to avoid the potential dangers of infidelity is to simply avoid situations where sexual temptations cloud moral integrity. The vast majority of people marry with the intention of living up to marital vows. By keeping the focus on marriage, and working to live within the boundaries of moral character, infidelity becomes less of a consideration in any relationship.
