THE UN-MOTHER IN YOUR CORNER
A Stepmother's Case for a Change of Pace
I wasn't there when you were born.
I chose to love you; save your scorn.
Perhaps you'll realize, when you're grown,
I'm much more than a chaperone.
Your family's loss was tragic, true.
And you are right to steam and stew.
Yet, that was long before my time,
And though I care, it's not my crime.
To parent you was not my aim,
And I refuse to play the game.
Still, I would welcome you within;
By joining forces, we could win.
For life consists of twists and bumps,
Although we all must take our lumps,
Together we can merge our might,
Or we can bicker, moan and fight.
Perhaps your parents chose their sides,
With snappy comebacks, sharper chides,
But I would rather see you grow
To learn to love before you go.
I hope that you can be mature
Beyond your years, so you'll be sure
And see that I've been backing you
Far longer than you ever knew.
