The Science of Getting Rich, by W. D. Wattles is a practical manual about a concept that seems to elude many people who desire wealth. The book opens with a chapter entitled, "The Right to be Rich". It is fitting that Wattles begins by explaining why one should want to be rich and dispels any belief that there is something evil about wanting to be rich. He provides a different view of riches. Elevating the subject to speaking on potential and abundance, he explains that money is a tool in society. This tool enables one to acquire other tools which mankind can use for advancement. In this sense he illustrates how every person has the right to want to reach whatever their fullest potential entails. He even flips the notion that to want more is greedy or somehow evil and says,
"In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way. To be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little. No one ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more. The purpose of nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life, and everyone should have all that can contribute to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life. To be content with less is sinful." (P.11)
Wattles writes from a position of certainty and boldness. Readers may be put off or shocked by his philosophy (which he would say is a science). If one can read through the entire book, which is a mere sixty four pages, a worthy point is made. This is a unique expression of God.
God is omnipotent and omnivorous. God did form the universe and everything therein. The Bible's creation passage explains that with thought' and words' God made the world and everything and every creature of the earth.
Wattles explains that people have the power of creation as well. This also agrees with the Bible "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness" (Gen. 1:26). Thoughts are things. Every thought is a creation. People can and do create what they are thinking about. People give energy to what they think about with great passion. Therefore whatever the mind focuses on grows and manifests itself, whether good or bad, abundance or scarcity.
"THOUGHT IS THE ONLY POWER WHICH CAN PRODUCE TANGIBLE RICHES from the formless substance. The stuff from which all things are made is a substance which thinks, and a thought of
