Come into my garden and sit a spell, enjoy the loveliness of the season, the flowers, birds and butterflies and if we are lucky we may perchance have a visit from the wee folks, the fairies, elves , leprechauns and gnomes. They are delightful, though those leprechauns and gnomes can be a wee bit mischievous from time to time.
What! You don't believe in fairies and such? You think it is all a bunch of nonsense. Well you haven't visited my garden. Perhaps you should create a fairy garden of your own. It is a lovely place to sit on a summer day and it will make a believer out of you. Let me tell you how.
First, all Fairy Gardens need a large rock, not too large but not to small. Most any large rock will do but a white one is preferable, a fair size boulder, white feldspar or one with some good white veins of feldspar will do nicely. Maybe you already have one in your yard, on the east side; the rock should be on the east side in a sunny spot with just a bit of shade after mid day. You'll need a few smaller rocks as well but I'll explain more about them later.
About four feet behind the large boulder plant three lilac bushes, 2 deep purple and 1 white 3 feet apart; one purple on either side and the white in the center. On either side of the lilacs, again four feet from the rock, plant an elder bushes (the music tree, you'll need 2). The measurements are important so pay attention. In front of the lilacs, between them and the rock, plant 7 clumps of mallow plants. In front of the mallow plants, between the mallow plants and the rock you need to plant 5 clumps of daylily, 3 must be lemon yellow and 2 orange tiger lilies, plant them yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow.
Now move to the front of the rock. Exactly 30 inches out from the center point of your rock, for this you will have to measure the diameter, place your birdbath fountain here. Now don't think this is just for the birds. The wee folks will stop by for a dip as well. They love a fountain. From the center of the base of the fountain, turn up a 2 foot arch to the center of the diameter of the base of your fountain. Here is where you will plant your narcissus and daffodils intermingled with poppies, bluebells and primrose, a little here, a little there. All the way along the front edge of the arch plant lily-of-the-valley intermingled with forget-me-nots. Don't crowd your plants too closely but fill the area completely. The wee folks will love you and you will have blossoms from spring through the autumn
