Tips for feeding your cat

Cats can be very finicky and need fresh food and water daily .I feed my cat first thing in the morning with a dry formula especially for indoor cats that contains added dental care components.Choose a regular feeding place because then your cat associates this place with eating. At feed time my cat has come to expect a good cuddle and brush.

At night time I give my cat wet food from a can and buy an assortment of meat types to vary flavor and nutrition.

If the food is too old or hot she will not go near it and walks away.I buy small cans but if you find this too expensive divide a larger can into meal size portions and freeze for ultimate freshness.

In my area due to the drought we have had an ant problem. They have come inside to find food and ultimately found and climbed all over the cat bowl.To counteract this I have placed the food bowl in another dish of water so the ants cannot get to the food.Alternatively clean and remove the bowl after each meal.Indoor cats need fresh grass to keep healthy. My cat will follow me all over the house if she sees and smells these salad greens.I keep a pesticide free patch out side and pick some each day and bring inside for her dining pleasure.I have a small vase like container that I place the grass, always in an upright position because this closely mimics nature when they can pull on the stalks. You can also grow wheat or barley seeds in a container of potting soil or a grass called Dactylis glomerata. This is a perennial pasture grass and adapts well to container planting as long as it can have sunlight.I have containers I rotate from outdoors to indoors and sow regularly to keep a constant supply. This works well if you have limited space, live in an apartment or do not have a patch of earth.Cats like to be independent so provide a container of greens that your cat can happily munch away at any time. The ultimate in cat hygiene is a clean litter tray at all times.I provide two trays so there is always a clean one .After using many brands and types of litter I prefer a Lucerne based product that breaks down in the garden or compost heap and nourishes the soil. The solids can be flushed down the toilet easily leaving only the litter to dispose of.After all these activities of eating ,drinking and attending to functions of nature a cat needs to play.Provide toys,a scratching post and time to interact with your cat. They are a lot happier and content when they are stimulated.I find ping pong balls are cheap and provide much entertainment as does small mouse like toys to toss and throw in the air.I also have a fishing line style toy with a variety of dangling items on the end that can swing, sway and be pulled along. They love to stalk ,chase and leap into the air and these activities provide healthy exercise that keep your cat agile and alert.f Keep these tips in mind and you should have years of company from your feline friend.
