HEALING FROM THE INSIDE OUT
God cares for every part of us body, mind and spirit - the parts we like to show off and the parts we want to hide. He understands us better than we could ever understand ourselves. He wants what is best for us, and is willing to work with us to get it. If we are willing to trust the Spirit of Jesus to guide us, he will take us on a journey of self-discovery. He will show us where we need to be healed, and give us that healing. This is a gradual process which helps us open up and become more able to give and receive love, acceptance and forgiveness. Everyone needs this kind of healing, and it is never finished until we meet God face-to-face in heaven.
When our bodies are sick or hurt, our built-in healing system helps us get better. Sometimes we need doctors and medicines. Sometimes we have to work hard to get better. It can take a long time. Often we don't recover fully, and we wonder why. Throughout this process, we can pray and ask others to pray for us. Even if we aren't healed in the way we hoped, the process is a blessing if it brings us closer to God and to each other.
When our emotions or spirits are sick or hurt, we have trouble enjoying life. It is harder to get along with others. We have trouble feeling love. Even if we don't show it, we are sad and angry and want to make somebody pay for our hurt. If the hurt is very deep, we often don't feel any pain at first. Later, we start feeling bad and acting in ways we don't understand. Sometimes it gets bad enough to make us wonder whether we are going crazy. Our emotions affect the way our bodies work and also affect the way we relate to God. In order to be physically and spiritually healthy, we have to be emotionally healthy as well.
We have a built-in healing system for our emotions just as we do for our bodies. If we let ourselves feel them, talk them out, and pray to God, they gradually start to heal. It often seems easier to ignore the hurt. That's okay - we have to get on with our lives - but if we never let our painful feelings come to the surface, they become like a festering infection that is invisible from the outside but poisons the whole person.
When something harmful has been stored deep inside for a while, it may take some detective work to figure out what is bothering us. A good way to do that is to sit quietly alone or with a trusted friend and ask Jesus to show us what needs healing. When something comes to mind, we can think about it and maybe talk to somebody about
