Finding a breed to match your horsemanship

These had years and years of training and experience under their girths though. Here it is personality, temperament, age and training that determines the suitability more than breed alone. Since horses can easily live into their thirties, and with proper care stay sound, most people will be much better off if they select a horse that is at least twenty for their first horse. They not only are better companions than a younger horse they are less likely to get into trouble. Thoroughbreds are another "hot" breed that with age and training can make wonderful entry level horses.

While I've worked with many breeds from Arabians to Welsh Ponies my own personal choice is the Tennessee Walker with the Missouri Fox Trotter running (excuse me gaiting) a close second. They are "light" breeds in that they are especially used for riding and pulling vehicles with passengers. They have smooth gaits that are a great comfort to those of us who have gotten on in years. While they tend to be more laid back than Arabian or TB's there are still individuals that are only suitable for highly skilled horse people in these breeds. Again the most important factors are training, temperament, experience and age. When buying a horse it is better to make haste slowly and find exactly the one that is right for you. The last time I looked for a horse for myself it took eighteen months for me to find the perfect horse. We've been together nine years now and he is my best buddy.
