Rating the 2008 American Idol contestants

There is a reason why American Idol has been around for seven seasons. It is one of the first shows of its kind, it offers entertainment of all sorts, and it has some reality television to it. Every aspiring singer dreams of being on that stage singing and hearing only good things of course from the three judges (love them or hate them) Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell. These three judges sparked off so many copy cats that it gets monotonous. It seems that when a formula works for television, so many other stations try to come up with the same thing. If you notice, since American Idol began there have been an overload of talent competitions that always have two male judges with one female. There's always one mean judge out of the bunch and quite frankly it's annoying.

On March 6, 2008 the top 12 American Idol contestants for season seven were chosen. This group is said to be their best out of all of the seasons. That could be true, but I do not think that there is any Kelly Clarkson (Season one winner) in the group. American Idol should thank Clarkson for without her I do not think that Idol would be as popular today. After seeing how successful she became many aspired to be like her and realized that this show was onto something. Clay Aiken (Season two runner-up) proved you didn't have to be the winner in order to make a successful career out of it. And Chris Daughtry (season 5 fourth runner-up) proves that you don't necessarily have to be in the top two to one day be nominated for a Grammy.

Now that American Idol is down to only 12 contestants, only one singer will be voted off each week. My big favorite is 17 year-old David Archuleta. His modesty and sweet nature is incredibly enduring and will be very effective for votes. His singing ability is almost perfection. After singing John Lennon's "Imagine" his sincerity shined through and made viewers cry. He is young and charming with a huge ability to sing. If he continues to sing on the big stage as well as he has on the small stage he should definitely win this competition.

Twenty three year-old Amanda Overmyer is my second favorite. She must pick the right songs like she did last week with Joan Jett and the Blackheart's "I Hate Myself for Loving You." She has a raspy, bluesy voice that stands her out from the rest of the contestants, but with the wrong song choice she can sound truly awful. I like how she plays to the crowd as she rocks out. She is one cool chick.
