Do your research if you have no idea what you're fishing with your more than likely not going to catch much.
The US Patent 4351128 for fishing bobbers and sinkers describes them as such, "A fish line bobber or sinker, depending upon the density of the material from which the device is made. The device comprises an elongated cylindrical or barrel-shaped body having a central longitudinal passage extending from one end to the other." It goes on with its description suggesting the bobber or sinker should not move on the line and also describes the jobs of each.
What style
A great type of sinker is the slip shot. It is a small ball made of lead with a slit cut in the middle. It pinches onto the fishing line and is very versatile, maybe the most of all the weights.
The excellent trolling sinkers used for high rushing river waters, like where bass live, are attached to the fishing line with a clinch knot at each end. It allows the bait to remain in deep water. It works best with a light shrimp like bait or flyers that look like little pom-poms.
Dipsey sinkers, casting or deep sea sinkers are number one for fishing on the ocean floor. These sinkers are the exceptional for the rocky bottoms or jagged sandy mounds because its rounder shape allows for less snags.
There are many other sinkers ranging from Egg shaped to cones, colorful to bland. It's always good to check with someone during the purchase of the items. Advice can never be harmful if it's good advice.
Snap on bobbers are one of the easiest to attach to the fishing line. They usually look like a Christmas ball with a lock on hook at the top. The colors are normally solid yellow or are split in half red and white. Inexpensive and are the best for laid back fishing experiences when you cast the line and post the pole. They are best used with worm or tack on bait not small fish. The small fish will pull the line easily and confuse the fisherman when the bobber is bouncing easily from the movements of your bait.
For light biters and also good in salt water fishing expeditions the cigar shaped bobber or slip bobbers are awesome at doing their job. These help the line cast with torpedo like shape that flies threw the air further away
