I am a survivor of domestic violence. "I can't leave him because I love him." Most victims say. It is an excuse covering the real truth. The real truth is it is difficult for one to admit that another person has that much control over you. So much so you can not save yourself.
The United State Department of BUREAU Statistics defines domestic violence as a violent crime by current or for ex spouses, boyfriends, and girl friends. These crimes include homicide, rape, sexual assault, and robbery, aggravated and simple assault.
The cycle of violence is:
Stage 1: "The calm before the storm" It is a period of calm where tension and stress slowly builds. There will be minor incidents. They are pushing, threats, throwing things. The victim may push for the next stage.
Stage 2: The Violent Stage: This is where the explosive outburst and significant violence happens. Friends may try to intervene.
Stage 3: The HONEYMOON Stage: The abuser apologizes. There is an increase in closeness and affection. The abuser promises it will never happen again.
To leave such a relationship, the victim will need a specific plan of escape. Pack to bags which include:
-set of keys
-money
- Clothes
- Toiletries
-copy of pay stubs and other financial records
-green card, visa, or other immigration records if applicable
- Phone numbers of family, friends, shelter or agency that can help
-social security cards for yourself and children
-copy of monthly bank statement
-legal documents like order of protection or restraining order
-find a local support group in newspaper
