From the tiny iPod Nano, to the widescreen iPod Touch, all current iPods allow you to watch videos on the go. Probably not the best for when you're driving a car, but it certainly speeds a bus trip along. The great thing about video on an iPod is that there is tonnes of video content out there for free, you just have to know where to look.
Just a word to the wise before we begin... There are better ways to get free videos than file sharing software, such as Limewire or BitTorrent. Their videos are often low quality and riddled with viruses, not to mention it's illegal.
Now we'll start. Firstly, if you're lucky enough to have an iPod Touch, you can browse through millions of free YouTube videos whenever you connect to the internet through wi-fi. The rest of us will have to find some other ways.
The best and most popular source of free videos is from within iTunes and they're called video podcasts (vodcasts). To browse the iTunes vodcast collection, click the 'podcast' icon in the tray on the left of the iTunes window and then 'browse directory' at the bottom of the screen. These vodcasts cover everything, from video games to gardening, politics to sport; there are even a few TV shows available free of charge. If you subscribe to a podcast then a new episode will download automatically whenever it's available. You can then configure your iPod to update these videos automatically by clicking the 'podcast' tab in the iPod window.
There are also ways to get legal video downloads online. Google Video (www.video.google.com) offers many free videos to download, including several feature films and documentaries. What's more, they come pre-formatted for the iPod. To download a video click the 'download' button from the right hand side of the page and select iPod. Atom Films has a great selection of short films for iPod to download fee of charge at: www.atomfilms.com/films_to_go. jsp
If you want to watch TV shows and Movies then you're going to have to buy them on the iTunes Music Store, or transfer them from DVDs you already own. iTunes doesn't help you get video of DVDs, to do that you'll need some extra software. The easiest to use is 'No Frills DVD2iPod' for Mac or 'Videora' for PC. Both are free and available online. To download the Mac software go to: www.versiontracker.com/dyn/mor einfo/macosx/28604, for the PC software go to: www.videora.com/en-us/Converte r/iPod.
