If you have enough steady income coming in and you are willing to use the discipline required required to write everyday then you could consider quitting your day job to blog full time. Most people don't have the financial security to even think about it. Even though I have some retirement income coming in I would not consider such a choice. There are a few who have the ability to jump in and take off to make it work but this is the exception not the norm.
Helium is my first exposure to this sort of concept. It is not a blog per say but it uses similar concepts. Helium places advertisements on the page of your article. Your article gets ranked. The higher your ranking the more likely your article will get viewed. As the article is viewed the advertisements on your page are more likely to get clicked on. This is one of the ways a writer gets paid as advertisements get clicked on. This concept is used for blogging but many sites require some know how in html and so forth for setting up your pages.
The way the concept works the earnings will be slow at first. Depending on the time you have for writing it could take awhile to earn a significant income blogging. In my case I only have time to write an occasional article. If I have any down time due to illness, writers block, research, etc then it is even less frequent. As I have frequented other areas of Helium, I see some people are experiencing success. Some find a few additional avenues to get published in the market or find other sites that work similar to Helium. Some even get discovered and given offers that could allow them to quit that day job.
The good thing I like here at helium is that once you have an article wrote it will continue to earn pennies no matter what you do or don't do. Including this article I have written five at this time. I have one that earns about two cents a month while the others are randomly getting a penny here and there. I have seen just enough of this concept to understand how it works. While I am enjoying this and I like what I see, I am not even close to thinking about giving up my main job. For most people the best course of action is to keep their main job until the income gets to a comfortable level. At that point they will probably have to give up their main job to put the required to further their writing career. It is nice to work in your on home but with very few exceptions it is not as easy as it sounds.
