The spring in my opinion is the best time to catch fish. Many anglers that don't fish in the spring will miss out on some of the biggest bass. If you are an angler that is looking for that monster bass then you better get you stuff together and hit the water in the spring.
There are several things to consider when fishing in the spring. One is the fish are just coming off the deeper water where they have spent most of the winter in the bitter cold months. So when the water warms in the spring, so does their metabolism and everyone knows when your metabolism is up, so is your appetite. Spring is great to the common angler because the fish are shallow and more acceptable to reach by someone without a boat.
There are several types of techniques I like to use during the spring. The first of them is crank baiting the mouths of coves. This can be some of the best fishing in the world. The bas are becoming more aggressive and looking for a meal. Bass will suspend in the mouths of these lake coves waiting on the temperature of the lake to reach the prime temperature for spawning. Usually the spawning temperature will be around 58 to 62 degrees depending on the location of the region you are in the United States.
My second favorite technique for fishing in the spring is to sight fish. By this I mean I will actually put on my polarized sunglasses and look for the big bass on the spawning beds. This is harder to do in lakes with little water clarity but it can still be done. I like to tie on a Texas rigged plastic salamander or lizard and toss it on the other side of the bass on the bed and slowly move it into the bed. Since salamanders and lizards eat the bass eggs, the big bass will latch on the predator and the fight is on.
Since the spawning season will not last the whole spring, I like to catch the post spawn bass. These bass will move back to the same place they were before they spawned in the mouth of the coves. These bass will be less aggressive to bite just anything so I opt for throwing something big like a larger version of hard jerk bait. These bass will be more susceptible to bite a bigger lure. The reason for this is that it will take them just as much effort to chase down small baits as it does a big bait, but with big baits they will get more of a meal.
There are several ways to catch bass during the spring. These are just my favorites. One thing you need to remember when fishing in the spring is that this is the time of the year that the biggest bass are caught so you don't want to miss out by sitting on the couch waiting for it to warm up.
