Traveling by air is becoming more and more difficult. Traveling with an infant can add even more stress to an already daunting task. Keeping the following tips in mind should help your next airline trip with your infant relatively stress-free.
WHILE BOOKING YOUR TICKET
Airlines have varying policies regarding how infants are to travel with adults. If your child is under two years old, they can usually be considered a lap-baby and sit in your lap. Some airlines will require you to have a carseat, some may provide carseats for you, while others have no such restrictions. It is important to let the airline know you are traveling with a baby so they can let you know of their rules, and get your infant's name on their roster.
PACKING
Knowing what to pack is extremely important when taking your infant on an airplane. Make sure to calculate enough diapers to get you through the day, then double that number. You never know when you may be delayed unexpectedly. Bring two extra sets of clothing for your baby (trust me, one may not be enough), as well as an extra tshirt for yourself, just in case your baby gets sick or has a leaky diaper. Receiving blankets are great for changing baby. Bring an extra plastic bag or two in case you have to re-pack soil clothes or need somewhere to put a dirty diaper. Bring your baby's favorite toy, blanket, pacifier, and snacks to comfort him and keep him entertained.
ARRIVING AT THE AIRPORT
Arrive at the airport a little earlier than you normally would. Check everything except your little one's stroller, his diaper bag, and your carry-on. Some people are tempted to check the stroller, but it will be useful for helping you to carry your things and your infant through the airport, particularly if you have long layovers or are in a large airport.
GOING THROUGH SECURITY
Attempting to put a stroller, a purse, a diaper bag, and your shoes on the conveyor belt of the security xray machine all while holding an infant is difficult to say the least. It is important to ask for help. Do not stress about taking too long to do things. Most people recognize the plight of a harried parent and are kind and patient.
BOARDING THE PLANE
Most airlines will allow you to board the plane early with your infant. Take advantage of this. Boarding early will let you take your time finding your seat, and get yourself situated without having to worry about crawling over other people or making them wait for you once the plane is full.
