I'm going to start off plain and simple: Yes, I do think that cell phones should be allowed in schools. Instead of making up new reasons, I'm going to take the best of both sides and analyze:
1) Emergencies: Yes, I think that cellphones are necessary for emergency situations. I think that it is ridiculous whenever a school official tells a student to go to the "main office" and use the school's phone to contact someone during an emergency. The problem is, the school doesn't know what an emergency is. God forbid the school caught fire, I don't think people would be rushing to the office to call their parents. Besides these "real" emergencies, I also consider things like being robbed on the street emergencies. You're probably thinking, "why in the hell is he being so specific?". Well, let's just say I've experienced that situation. I immediately contacted the police, and then contacted my parents to let them know what had happened. So for emergencies, cell phones are a must.
2) Socializing: I don't think that people should be socializing [with cellphones] in classes, but I see no problem with them doing so at lunch. However, because there is no way to enforce this, I don't think that they should be allowed in school for this reason. Although I am a student, and I DO want to be allowed to keep my cellphone on hand, logically speaking, it's too much of a distraction for students. I know myself. I get at least 2-3 text messages from Facebook or friends everyday during class (but my phone is always on vibrate). Phones for socializing = no no.
3) After-School Activities: Apart from socializing during school hours, cellphone are very necessary for telling your friends where you're going to be. This way, if you need to collaborate on a project, or just hang out, you'll know where to meet each other. This is also a great way, and the only way I can think of, to tell your parents if something comes up after school. Yes.
4) Everyone needs a cellphone at a certain age, not because they've hit that age, but of the ever-growing need of human contact. Really, try going 2 days without talking to anyone on the phone, by text message, or by email. It's not impossible, but it makes your life a hell of a lot harder, especially if you need to work on something with other people. That being said, I don't think that 10-12 year olds should have Sidekicks, because: a)It goes against what I stated in #2 b)It's just wrong. Children at this age shouldn't be talking to their friends through AIM all the time, instead of face-to-face. Yes.
In conclusion, I really think that cellphones have become an indispensable accessory in our everyday lives.
