best known for her role in To Have To Have Not in 1944. This was her first big film as well as when she met and soon after married Humphrey Bogart. She was known for her raspy voice and good looks. Like Hepburn and Tracy, she went on to do several more films with Bogart such as Key Largo. She stayed married to Bogart until he died in 1957. She soon remarried to only divorce later. She was never recognized for her work from the Academy throughout most of her career until 1997 when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Mirror Has Two Faces, but she didn't win.
Ingrid Bergman was a Swedish born actress who began her career in Sweden. She was discovered by an MGM representative in the late 1930's. She signed with MGM to make one of the best movies ever made, Casablanca. In 1944 she starred in Gaslight which won her an Oscar. She continued with great success in The Bell's of Mary and Joan of Arc which both characters she portrayed were religious and earned her Oscar nominations. Bergman starred in two Alfred Hitchcock films Notorious and Spellbound. Throughout her career she managed to get seven nominations from the Academy and won two times for Best Actress in Anastasia (1956) and Best Supporting Actress in Murder on the Orient Express (1975). Bergman died in 1982 from complications after undergoing breast cancer surgery.
Judy Garland began making a name for herself in the latter part of the 1930's. In 1939 she starred in one of the most watched movies of all time, The Wizard of Oz. It wasn't well-received at that time, but it found its way through time and has become extremely popular with people of all ages. Garland starred in mostly musicals throughout the 40's including Meet me in St. Louis and Easter Parade. A Star is Born (1955) displayed Judy's true acting skills and earned her an Oscar nomination. She continued her career until the early 60's. Garland left behind an incredible history of films as well as music. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a testimony of how great of a singer she was. "Rainbow" is a tall order for any artist to try to sing.
Joan Fontaine was born in Tokyo, Japan. Her real name was Joan de Havilland, but changed it since her sister Olivia de Havilland had her own acting career in high gear and wanted to be an actress in her own right. Joan's first big film was Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca. She starred in another Hitchcock movie entitled Suspicion. For both flicks Fontaine won Oscar nominations but received the only Best Actress
