Dealing with depression

Created on: March 11, 2008

Depression is a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity or simply put, sad feelings of gloom and inadequacy. While I appreciate the role that spirituality can play in helping to heal depression, only dealing with the root of what is causing depression can help to relieve the symptoms and even help to alleviate some or all of the symptoms. While faith and spirituality can offer strength and support for depression, if the underlying cause is not addressed, then depression can continue without ending. Many times the symptoms of depression can help you and a doctor to determine what may be causing your depression and what to do for treatment.

One of the most common characteristics looked for in a person with depression is if he or she comes from a background where close relatives suffer from depression as well. Medical professionals believe that depression is genetic and can be passed on from generation to generation. This is most likely due to a hormonal imbalance within the body and can be treated with regular medication. While it may take some time to find the right medication for each individual, the relief provided by the correct one is definitely worth the wait!

When a person deals with trauma in their life or they have an unhealthy level of stress for an extended period of time, this can also lead to depression. Life changes such and college graduation, divorce or even the loss of a loved one can trigger depression. The best way to deal with this type of depression might be to talk with someone who can help you to recognize and deal with what is causing the depression. A psychiatrist, life coach, psychotherapist, religious leader or other qualified individual can start you on the right path. Sometimes therapy combined with medication works best for people who feel the need for something more.

If a person suffers from a serious illness such as cancer or HIV, this can understandably cause depression. This is very common in these situations and the treating physician often has someone specifically chosen for their patients to help them deal with the weight of their illness.

Depression can be just a symptom of a completely different psychological disorder. Eating disorders, substance abuse, schizophrenia and other mental disorders can trigger depression in an individual. The main psychological disorder must be addressed in these cases.

Depression is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. Depression effects an estimated 15% of the population in the United States during the course of any individual's life. You are likely to know someone with depression even though it may not be obvious to you. Depression is real and treatable. The first step is always the hardest, but worth the persistence. Take the first step and call your primary care physician today for relief.
