France is a country brimming with beauty both regionally, and within its people. I have had the good fortune to visit France on numerous occasions, and can gladly say that I have never once had a bad experience. In fact, every time I have been in France I have found the people most genial.
I think the key to being a successful visitor in France is to be open to their culture, their language, and their traditions. It is presumptuous to visit any country and assume that they speak English, that they know American customs, or that they even like Americans. It is our responsibility to visit with an eagerness to learn, the ability to be pliable, and the willingness to speak their language and explore new ideas, places, and things.
One of the most important things a visitor in France can do is attempt the language. Even if your French is awful their appreciation for your attempt is priceless, and will thus prove advantageous because they will be more willing to help you as well.
You do not have to know how to speak perfect French and knowing some of the simplest phrases can go a long: Merci, Bonjour, Au Revoir, S'il vous plait. Attempting to speak their language shows a respect for them and their country. The French are proud of their country and their language; compliments, like speaking French go a long way.
It is no secret the French take pride in how they look, and how they eat; and therefore you should too. Do not be afraid to try different foods. French food is a gastronomical delight, and going to McDonald's, an American franchise, will not earn you respect. If you really need a burger then go ahead pop inonce, even McDonald's in Europe has a different feel than the American restaurants. But get out there and try French food, the pastries are amazing, and who can say no to crepes, or French onion soup.
As for clothing, dress simple, no white tennis shoes and ball caps, because these scream American tourists. You can wear comfortable shoes that are not the classic white sneaker. Khaki, or black trousers, and lately dark jeans are comfortable and chic. You do not have to buy a new wardrobe, but dress sensibly.
I am an American who loves to travel, and have found that it is important to have some knowledge of the language, and the culture of where you are traveling. If you want hospitality it is important to show hospitality. Remember you are a visitor in their country, and it is important to keep in mind how you would treat a visitor, and how you want to be treated as a visitor.
