Short stories: Romance

Mike laid next to Kristi for hours her warm body keeping him feeling warmer than he felt in years. His fingers gently rubbing her left arm as he stared at her while she slept the moonlight coming in the apartment window lighting her hair glistening in the night as she lay asleep.

He felt so calm and peaceful with her thinking about the events earlier in the evening when they laid on the bed staring at the stars in the clear Midwestern skies. Their hands entwined as they lay staring up out the window a slight breeze kept blowing in gently moving her soft reddish brown hair against his face.

She kept apologizing and he kept saying it was alright after all he didn't mind it was so soft, pretty and smelled like the lilacs his grandma used to grow in her backyard. She made him feel as safe like each summer in that backyard and that was better than the world he had been living in the last few years.

His battle scars on his back a constant reminder of the violent world he just returned from only to find his family gone, his ex-girlfriend had emptied his apartment when she left only leaving the bed he was laying on with her.

Kristi occasionally looked at his scars in the moonlight and fought to keep the tears from falling down her cheeks as she could sense the pain he must have felt when the bullets entered his body. She tried hard to ignore them but there were so many scars it was hard to forget about them. She would glide her fingers over his arms but, there were shrapnel marks on them too each time she bumped the one on his upper right arm he moved as there was some of them metal left in that one. It was too close to an artery so they left the metal in to avoid risking the loss of his arm.

"I'm sorry." she apologized as she bumped it again; he twitched almost falling off the bed his teeth clenched in obvious pain.

"It's alright I bump it all the time it is rather hard to avoid. Did I mention you look really pretty in the moonlight?" he asked trying to change the subject.

She just giggled and looked back up at the stars trying to pretend as if he hadn't just flirted with her again. Her left hand fingers wrapped in an almost death grip around his right hand. She was so afraid to let go of him, she didn't want this evening to ever end but she knew she would have to go soon. Her girlfriend was headed back to pick her up in about an hour or so and she had to go to take her home.

Just then, his lips touched her cheek kissing her softly her eyes closed drinking in each feeling
