There exist a series of confusion over the term Wiccan and Paganism; more than any other two words. Even as recently as August of 2002, the Roman Catholic Monsignor Peter Elliot is quoted as saying "I'd be appalled if [repealing the law] implies some sort of approval...I think it [Paganism and Wicca unsure of what to call it other than witchcraft] reflects the collapse of values and sanity in our society that this mishmash of superstition and fraud is to be recognized." The law the Monsignor is referring to is the criminal code in Canada and other countries of the former British Empire tat is still on the books which states in effect that the practice of Wiccan and similar religions such as Paganism is banned.
One Christan author, Philip Johnson, wrote, "I cannot help but feel that Christians are at times the very worst advertisement for the teaching of Jesus... I feel that many Christians have the propensity for violating one of the Ten Commandments. The commandment of the violated is the one about not bearing false witness against one's neighbor." Wicca is a modern creation with some of its sources pre dating the Christian era. The difference between different paths is regarding the direct, continuous descendant of an early Pagan belief system. Most Wiccans see it as a modern reconstruction of this base religion.
Many of the reputable authors of Wiccan practices agree, there is very little archaeological evidence to support any theories, paths or roots of pre-Modern forms of any form of Paganism or Wiccan. Although they are known to exist, very little remains except myth and legend. Even what was practiced thirty years ago bares little resemblance of what is practiced today by either Pagans or Wiccans. Nearly every month a new theory is published which claims to be the "true" Irish Pagan, Druidism, or Faery Wicca.
A well known author said it best, "Wicca as you practice religion today, is a new religion, barely fifty years old. The techniques you use at present are not entirely what your elders practiced even thirty years ago. Of course, threads of what was weave through the tapestry of what is now....in no way can we replicate to perfection the precise circumstances of environment, society, culture, religion and magick a hundred years ago, or a thousand. Why would we want to? The idea is to go forward with the knowledge of the past, tempered by the tools of our own age." Silver RavenWolf 1998
