Which Creation Story?

Long ago when heaven and earth were one, the entire universe was contained in an egg-shaped cloud. A huge giant, Pan Gu, grew in the chaos. He slept in the egg for 18,000 years. One day he stretched and broke the shell releasing matter into the universe.
(Chinese creation story)

In the Hopi version, the Supreme Being Taiowa creates the finite creature Sotuknang as his agent to establish nine universes.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Then he created Man and rested on the seventh day.

These are just three of hundreds of stories of creation. Which one explains how man came to be? They all do, depending on your belief system. All of them are man's attempt to explain something in nature that he couldn't understand; therefore, they fall in the category of mythology. None of them are even remotely supported with empirical data. To be fair we would have to teach everyone one of the creation stories to accommodate students from many backgrounds. What gives one story more credence than the other? All of these stories of creation involve a leap of faith.

Evolution tries to explain how man and all living things evolved on our planet. Science tries to explain the origins of our universe using theories like the Big Bang. We uncover fossils that help us piece together the puzzle of how we got here. Sometimes we have to go back and rearrange the pieces. We have explained the atom in several different ways over the years, as we were able to learn more. If, some day we find that Darwin's theory is flawed, we will replace it with a better version.

What is important to understand is, that all of the scientific data we use to explain the world, and what is in it, doesn't force anyone from believing their own version of how we came to be. Maybe the prime mover is working through evolution as we understand it, or maybe there is no prime mover.

One day at track practice, I was settling into the blocks to run the 440. As I positioned myself, I kept tucking my medals inside my shirt. My coach, Brother Arthur, bent down near me and said," Why don't you get rid of those medals?"

"Are you serious?" I replied.

He looked me straight in the eye and asked, " Do you wear your track shoes to church?"

This is why Creationism should not be taught alongside Evolution.
